Muslim drinking

Reader comment on item: More on Those Alcohol-shy Taxi Drivers
in response to reader comment: Never met a Muslim who didn't drink alcohol

I just spent 3 months living in Russia with family -- 01 June to 30 August '07. I do that every summer the last few years. During this latest summer in both our Siberian home city and also while traveling on a 3,000-mile roundtrip motor trip across S.W. Siberia and over the Urals into European Russia (to the former Soviet Republics of Bashkhortostan and Tatarstan which are huge Muslim enclaves) we frequented probably 20 Azerbaijan, Uzbekh and Kazakh cafes and restaurants -- in other words Muslim establishments.

They all serve vodka, beer and wine, and they all serve pork shish kebab and other pork dishes. The majority of Muslims in many countries do apparently eat pork and drink alcohol -- all but the very fundamental religious ones.
