Reader comment on item: Why the Left Loves Osama [and Saddam]

Submitted by Mike Elvin (United States), Apr 7, 2003 at 17:40

Mr Pipes needs to get out of the Northeast's big cities more often, to see what the rest of the country looks like. His neighborhood is obviously full of old-time Marxist-Leninists, but these became extinct in the rest of the universe around a dozen years ago.

In the dualistic view, anyone not in favor of the American war must, by definition, be in favor of Saddam's cruelties and al Qaeda's insanity.

Not so, my friend. Many of us, although apparently no more than thirty percent of the public, believe we have no compelling reason to invade Iraq-- not because Saddam's our guy, but because it subverts international law at a time when we should be supporting the concept, and mostly because the guy was just not threatening us.

The two concepts, US bad and Saddam good, just do not resonate in anyone's mind except for the ditto heads one seems to encounter so frequently nowadays.

If I may speak for those of us who disagree with what we perceive to be the administration's conquest of Islam, there is no one directing our thoughts from some Politburo Central, and no two of us think precisely the same way...

The only good thing that will come of this war will be the end of Saddam. It will bankrupt us both economically and morally, and create for us enemies we otherwise never would have had. It never should have been waged.
