The Oportunist Left

Reader comment on item: Why the Left Loves Osama [and Saddam]

Submitted by Paul Wakeford (United Kingdom), Mar 25, 2003 at 05:29

The left have been at it for years. Finding a bandwagon that fits their shaky criteria (if only by a bit) as long as the bandwagon is heading in the general direction of the progressive West As your article argues, they have very little to inspire them so, when Usama and Saddam pop up they have their heroes. Don't forget that for years the left worshipped Stalin, and Guevara- QED. Why do good people have to align with bad people and apparent monsters to support a dead cause?
To the "anti west broad left" you perhaps now have to add the museums of socialism of Old Europe - France, Germany and Belgium.
Incidentally, Belgium despite hosting the HQ of Nato, seems to have an appalling record in respect of supporting the UK by apparently refusing supplies of munitions during at least 2 of our military engagements over the past couple of decades.
