Canary Islands - haven for illegalsReader comment on item: [West Africa:] New Route to the West Submitted by Mike Randall (United Kingdom), May 31, 2006 at 08:56 As one who has visited, and enjoyed, the Canary Islands on many occasions, I am saddened and not a little worried about the continuous invasion by illegal immigrants, who are probably destined eventually to land up on my doorstep, here in the UK. The fact that the Spanish authorities do very little to deter them does not help, so I suggest a method to motivate them to act. Most of the tourists in the Canaries come from the UK and Germany and I am sure that a pronounced dip in the numbers would elicit some response. Lets face it - money talks, but the lack of it talks even louder. However, I don't expect any change in the attitude of my fellow Brits or the Germans - they would sleep-walk through even a full frontal assault, let alone such a back-door infiltration.
