The Wahaabs were in the same position in the 1700s as they were during WWI and as they are now.

There was no traps involved. Besides the Wahaabs were following Mohammad's axiom that the Arabs are the best of the people. I forget the sura and ayya.
The Turks were viewed as not being true Moslems because they didn't follow the Wahaab guidelines.
