Yaqoob states her allegiance

Reader comment on item: My Debate with London Mayor Ken Livingstone

Since the media aren't about to provide in-depth analysis, maybe we should highlight the pithier moments of the debate.

Here's one that I think is worth dwelling on: As quoted by many bloggers, ------------ Yaqoob, who supports the introduction of Sharia law, excused the attacks of 9/11 and 7/7 by claiming they were provoked by American (and British) actions in the Muslim world. She said of this: "Do you expect us not to fight back?" ------------ I note that little word "us". Two little letters that speak volumes.

Yaqoob is stating, clearly and definitively, which side of the clash of civilization vs. barbarity she stands on -- in terms that cannot be misunderstood, she declares her solidarity with the organizations and people that perpetrated what many regard as the two most definitive examples of pure, horrific terrorist violence in recent memory, which together have crystalized the understanding of the meaning of "terrorism" for an entire generation. Yaqoob might have said "it is understandable that *they* might feel that *they* have a need to fight back", where "they" might be some shadowy unnamed groups, perhaps of misguided idealists or paranoid homicidal maniacs. Not as good as condemning these organizations and refusing to admit grounds for justifying such raw evil, perhaps, but still a very long shot from linking arms with the barbarians...a long way of declaring herself a member of "Terrorists R Us".

I used to say that an extreme islamist is one who regards all international action in the mideast as a "War against Islam" (in doing so they identify "Islam" with "Islamic terrorism"). But now I believe an even more definitive test is whether or not they use the term "us" when speaking of those who carry out these attacks against civilisation.
