Why America does not let Israel win.

Reader comment on item: How Israel Can Win

Submitted by Maurice Picow (Israel), Apr 5, 2006 at 10:00

Note: the following was sent to the Jerusalem Post in regards to an article Daniel Pipes wrote concerning American unwillingness to allow Israel to win over the Palestinians:

Daniel Pipe's article questioning why America doesn't let Israel win against the Palestinians, should really be changed to read: Why the world doesn't let Israel win, or even better: why Israel doesn't let itself win. The Israeli military, though vastly superior to a undermanned and underarmed Palestinian entity , is unilaterally disengaging, as the Americans did in Vietman, and the French in Algeria. Every time this happens, the underdogs, in the case the Palestinians, score more points in the world arena of public opinion.

The Palestinians have been conditioned to play this kind of tactic, going back to when Yassir Arafat first organized the PLO. The numerous refugee camps, set up in 1949 and 1967, have been aided by UN sponsored organizations like UNHRA and UNICEF, resulting in the 'refugees' living in squalid conditions in order to bring world attention to their cause.

The last election was a clear indication that the hawks no longer control Israeli political thinking. As long as this is the case, a crushing military blow by Israel, or some kind of wholesale transfer plan just isn't going to be happen. The new Hamas led government will continue to receive electricity, water, food and medicines, and even tax revenues from the Israeli government, and various aid from abroad, especially from Arab and Islamic dominated regimes.

The big difference between Israel vs the Palestinians, and America vs Vietnam and Iraq, is that with the Americans, these problems were and are not sitting on their doorstep.
