Reader comment on item: How Israel Can Win

Submitted by J.Salas (New Zealand), Apr 4, 2006 at 23:46

Britain occupied Ireland (and still does in the North) for 600 years during which time it inflicted massive defeats on Irish rebels. The Irish regarded Ireland as their land and foiught for it.

Zionism is relatively new. Prior to this ,the Arab Palestinian residents had a better claim to their property , in legal terms , than the minority Jewish residents. I don't believe that any number of defeats will alter their dreams of reclaiming their ancestral lands.

I am well aware of the Ottoman occupation of Palestine for 700 years but history relates that the Arab population strove incessantly against their Turkish suzerains, unsuccessfully but they persisted.

Demographically, time is on the side of the Arabs. More disturbing is the knowledge that Israel cannot survive the loss of one war ; there is nowhere for the inhabitants to go and the Arab victors will not be subject to the restraints placed on Israel by the `objective' lovers of justice of the western world and Russia . Israel would be well advised to advance the cause of peace in the Middle East whilst it is militarily predominant.

I admire your scholarship and your knowledge but why do you expect Palestinian Arabs to be less attached to their ancestral lands than the modern Jewish population ?

I would be gratifed to see Israel reach that plateau of superior morality and ethics which it noisily claiming for itself and follow the precepts of my beloved Micah- to love mercy ,honour justice and walk humbly in God's path. Have a nice Pesach !
