Not Sure I Follow

Reader comment on item: Americans Wake Up to Islamism

The team's increasingly 'anti-Islamic' tone is understandable. I am not sure I follow what you are saying. The problem with relying on 'moderate Moslems' is that they are mostly wishful thinking. I can hardly believe my eyes when I see Daniel Pipes saying that Muslims alone (!) can offer an antidote to Islamism. The problem that you apparently don't want to see is that the Moslem moderates are too intimidated by the radical Islamists to engage politically against them. How would they not be if they see the president of the USA stupidly caving in.

I am afraid I have no more trust in the moderate, westernized moslems to stop the militant menace than I would have had in the civilized majority of Germans in 1930's to stop Hitler. The unfortunate role of large majorities is to follow those who are (or seem to be) in control. Modern Islam is not the solution. It is a cultural derivative which stands or falls with the resolve of the West to maintain its civilizational achievements and civic structures against ideologies and theocracies.
