Moderate Islam

Reader comment on item: [Moderate] Voices of Islam

I keep hearing phrases such as, "moderate Islam" or, sometimes, "peaceful Islam." It is no more possible to have moderate or peaceful Islam than it is to have hot ice or bright darkness. The foundations of Islam, laid out quite clearly in the Koran, all mitigate against "moderate" and "peaceful."

What is really being claimed is the watering down of a violence-based religion. If you took all the wishful thinking in the world and piled it up until it reaches the clouds, this would give you an idea of the total impossibility and, well, wishful thinking, involved in reforming Islam into a kindler, gentler belief-system.

Granted, there are Moslems who might disagree with some of the bang and bluster of the "fundamentalist" believer. But when push comes to shove and the opportunity arises to rid the world of America and Israel, many of the "moderates" and "peacefuls" will shout with joy the loudest.

But, there are always heretics in any religion. They don't last long and their voices are quickly stilled. So much for "moderate" and "peaceful".
