Reader comment on item: [Moderate] Voices of Islam

Dr. Pipes, thank you for providing the names of so many important traditional Muslim activists. I plan to suggest to the appropriate staff at my college that we hold forums in which tradtional Muslims-and not any Islamists-are allowed to articulate their important and potentially life-saving insight.

Furthermore, I hope that non-Islamist Muslims do not come to define their collective identity on only the basis of rejecting Islamism; they must also be a positive force (otherwise they would be as different from CAIR as Wahhabis are from Salafis). Islam is now at a critical juncture, as was Judaism in 70 C.E. after the destruction of the Second Temple. Only through iconoclasm (which has extensive Koranic roots) and triumph over imperialistic egotism can todays non-Islamist Muslims form a life-affirming Islamic tradition similar to the Rabbinic Judaism of the 1st and 2nd centuries CE.
