Fairy Tale

Reader comment on item: 100 Bin Ladens on the Way?

I think the only strong argument for the reduction of terrorism and extremism is a threat to all regimes that support terrorism. Let's hope they will get the message...

The rest I think is wishful thinking. Whatever Americans do in Iraq, the perceptions will always be negative, especially in the Arab World. Islamic and Arab communities are in the state of extreme agitation these days, and it's hard to see what and when will change this.

And why are you so sure that everything will be fine in Iraq. I see a great danger in the following: If Americans stay, they may become a target for a guerilla war, not by the remnants of Saddam's regime (he is now also a "Zionist traitor!"), but by Iraqi nationalists, reviving images of Vietnam and Somalia. If they leave it to the Iraqis, there may be a civil war between the three communities: the Shia, the Sunnis, and the Kurds. And if this was not enough, the Iranians and the Turks may join in the party...

These are of course extreme scenarios, but who can say that genuine democracy in an Arab country is more likely? To me this sounds like a fairy tale.
