An Islamic Reformation?

Reader comment on item: 100 Bin Ladens on the Way?

Submitted by Ken Besig (Israel), Apr 8, 2003 at 12:44

This Freedom for Iraq War could be the beginning of just what the Islamic Arab community needs more than anything else, an Islamic Reformation along the lines of the Protestant Reformation which took place in Europe several centuries ago.
The overthrow of one of the foremost Islamic Arab despots, indeed, Saddam Hussein is a homicidal maniac by any standard, by the forces of freedom may well lead to an awakening in the various Islamic Arab communities which have suffered so much from the self delusion and whining self pity that modern Islam has fostered among them. Islam as a faith based system has for far too long managed to avoid any real confrontation with modern reality. Certainly no better example of this is to be found than the Islamic Arab news "reports" of the events in the Iraq War. It is doubtful that any fantasies more complete and more self serving have ever been reported as news anywhere else in the world. Not recently in any event.
Perhaps as a result of the convincing, complete and rapid victory of the American/British forces, i.e. the Forces of Enlightenment, the Islamic Arab world will begin to base it's worldview on reason, logic, and objective facts, with free and open discussion of the issues facing them and thus take the first tentative steps into the twenty first century.
