Revolutionary Era?

Reader comment on item: Why I Just Quit the Republican Party

Submitted by PezDispenser (Israel), Jul 22, 2016 at 03:50

Dr. Pipes,

In the book Silent Revolution by the late historian Barry Rubin, the defeat of the old-school Liberal by what he called the New New Left (i.e. "progressives") was explained in detail. For example, the JFK-style security hawk moderate Democrat is now a minority within his own party.

After reading your articles on Trump, maybe Jeb Bush is right when he said that the conservative movement is temporarily dead. If true, then a similar revolution that defeated the Liberals in the Democratic party has now defeated the Conservatives in the GOP.

This has the effect that the two main post-WWII political pillars of US politics - the stewards who together brought the USA to superpower status - are now pushed aside in two silent revolutions.

And while the progressives and the Buchananite Trumpkins were always in the background (albeit on the fringes of US politics), the era of world crises (9/11, failed wars in the middle east, and 2007 economic depression) gave them the opportunity to take over.

Daniel Pipes replies:

It's hard to deny that the pillars are broken. But I don't quite see any "world crises," just the usual issues.
