Leaving the Republican Party

Reader comment on item: Why I Just Quit the Republican Party

Submitted by Ilbert Phillips (United States), Aug 1, 2016 at 12:16

For us individuals who have been loyal Republicans for years, it is disappointing that the political scene has degenerated under President Obama to the point where that the rank and file no longer trust party leaders or conservative intellectuals who spend their lives immersed in politics. The rank and file has taken a psychological beating over the last four years:

(1) Obama won the presidency because he ran as a black man; his actual political beliefs were irrelevant and if you voted against him you deemed a racist by the dominant culture. Obama care was passed without a single Republican vote, many are worse off, and the law was approved by the Supreme Court with faulty reasoning; Gay marriage was imposed on the American people by the Supreme Court; the Republicans allowed themselves to be tricked into a vote on the Iran Agreement (rather than insisting it be treated as a treaty), the police have taken a beating and race relations have hit bottom. The list could go on, but calling Mr. Trump names, that are easily applicable to Mr. Obama, and leaving the Republican party does not sound like an intelligent decision to me. We will see if that keeps him from becoming president.
