Reader comment on item: Why I Just Quit the Republican Party

Submitted by Marla Hughes (United States), Jul 21, 2016 at 19:39

It was leaders in the conservative movement who promoted Trump to prominence and allowed him to buy influence into their organizations. Organizations like CPAC, politicians like Ted Cruz and RadioE talkers who fill up conservative airwaves from sunrise to sunset like Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Bill Bennett and others.

The leadership of the GOP rejected Trump, but that gave him even more credibility as an anti establishment leader. And that's where our conservative leadership went very wrong. They put his, or anyone else's, being anti GOP 'establishment' over their stances on issues. That's why Ted Cruz and other conservative leaders spent the last three years befriending, collaborating with and defending Trump even against fellow conservatives.

GOP leadership was very reluctant to accept Trump's rise but since conservative leaders were defining him as a fellow traveler, could not work to undermine him without being accused of trying to rig the election for their own pick.
