Reader comment on item: Why I Just Quit the Republican Party

Submitted by Richard Benkin (United States), Jul 21, 2016 at 15:21

Bravo Daniel! These are the times that try men's souls. With so much at stake, we will be choosing between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to determine who will lead us for the next, hopefully, mercifully, the next four years. It is especially anguishing for conservatives who see Hillary Clinton as the representative of continued and increasing government overreach. Yet, you gave us some hope--that a stunning Trump defeat not only will save our nation from a leader with a seemingly endless downside; it also could be the rock on which a conservative Republican party rebuilds and finds itself again.

I have in the past suggested that Republicans might hope for 2016 to do for them what 1972 did for Democrats. I'm working very hard here in Illinois to help re-elect two principled Republicans who could be part of that rebuild: Senator Mark Kirk and Congressman Bob Dold. Both are conservatives who take seriously their responsibility to use their time in office to do good.
