Islamist Fascists

Reader comment on item: "At War with Islamic Fascists"

Dr. Pipes: I vote for "Islamist Fascists" as long as I get some credit if you accept it :). As you have indicated, part of this war is internal - teaching our own people who is the enemy and why. Islamist, alone, doesn't do that. Most people don't know what "Islamist" means - it doesn't convey a threat any more than any other "ist". Fascist, however, resonates deeply and reminds us of Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo who are, in many ways, similar to today's enemy. Adding the word "Islamist" describes the key differences from those enemies and removes any claim of labeling all Muslims as fascists. Maybe over time "Islamist" will take on its own clear connotation, as "Nazi" did, but for now, I believe it needs "Fascist" as its partner.
