Reader comment on item: Crisis in Turkey

Dear Dr. Pipes ,

... AKP may have moved against some high-ranking generals but as I can see those generals were were not taking any steps to improve the condition of the Kurds or Alevis.

It is the AKP which has been reaching out to Kurds by allowing them to educate themselves in Kurdish and open up a Kurdish television channel. I can tell you if Kurds become less secular and more Islamic the problems between Turkish state and the Kurds would evaporate, Remember there were no Kurdish problems under the non-secular Ottoman regime.

Now when you talk about secularism what about secularism and democracy in Saudi Arabia or Baharain ? Why do you not speak loudly for secualrization and democracy in those two countries ? Do you fear then that they will stop selling cheap oil to the US or ask the sixth US fleet to go somewhere else ?

Kindly answer me how can you oppose AKP but support the real anti-democratic forces i.e. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain ? Tell me.

Take care

Debanjan
