What is Jemaah Islamiyah?

Reader comment on item: [Beslan Atrocity:] They're Terrorists - Not Activists

What is Jemaah Islamiyah? This is a question posed today online by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The answer is also given:

"Jemaah Islamiyah ("Islamic community" in Arabic) is a militant group..."

This sort of distortion and softening of terrorists entities is systemic here in Canada.

Interesting, the article also says, "Following the Bali bombings, the U.S. designated JI a foreign terrorist organization."

JI is identified by the U.S. as a terrorist organization becasuse they have demonstrated that they are terrorists. In Canada we're not familiar with word definitions so we make up our own.

If in doubt Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is helpful.
mil•i•tant: engaged in warfare or combat.

terrorist: one who systematically uses terror especially as a means of coercion.

terror: violence (as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.
