"Women are tilth" attitude

Reader comment on item: Bridges TV, a Wife's Beheading, and Honor Murder

Holy Koran proclaims that women are the tilth of men - a plough field! If this is all the respect attached to women, one cannot expect great deal of respect for women in Muslim society.

No doubt, the cause for murder may not be rooted in any religious tenet. But, a person brought up on the staple diet of Koran, Sunnah and preachings of Ulama, cannot develop much respect for women. Doing halal of cow or woman who is wife, would all be the same. In India and Pakistan, gang raping girls for the sins of brothers is not uncommon. When a father in law rapes the daughter in law, the Ulama advise the daughter in law that in future she must live with her father in law! That is the gift of Islam to human society. It is possible that some local and tribal practices get mixed up with Islamised attitudes. But, then why don't learned Ulama advise their flock to shun such contemptuous attitude? Such an advise would be plainly contrary to the attitude advised for the Faithful in Koran. Violence against wife may be common to societies across religious fault lines. But, on account of Islam's very low opinion of women, such offences against women by Muslims captures attention more readily.

There are civilized way of breaking up a marriage than beheading the wife.
