in response to reader comment: poor female treatment is common

"If the good muslims wish the west or non muslims to view them with respect a good place to start is the poor treatment of women. End honor killings, allow women the vote, stop female genital mutilation (Phil Greend)."

I believe people should get their facts straight before claiming such things. I notice a pattern where people tend to hear or read a snatch from here, a snatch from there, and think they have become scholars on the topic. All the above mentioned issues, honor killings, allowing women to vote, and genital mutilation are CULTURAL, and not religious, and are practiced due to ignorance :).

Many of the rulings of Islam have to be understood holistically and within its context (In fact many things whether relating to history religion politics philosophy etc have to be looked at that way in order to get a better understanding of the situation etc).

I believe that if a person truly and sincerely desires in the deepest of his heart and soul to find the Truth, without any prejudices or biases, then he/she WILL find it :). But one has to know Who to turn for help to :).
