If they hadn't , they would have been Moslem lands long since. One relevant fact only. In A.D. 717 Constantinople was saved by Greek fire - a major military invention of "mass destruction" at that time. It probably sent more bloodthirsty Moslems to where they belong (=hell) than most conventional weapons before. Following your way of reasoning the Byzantines had no right to apply it as it was "morally wrong". And still the Greek fire saved civilization against Moslem barbarity. Applying your moral weapons we'll all end up in the Moslem hell (=dar-al-Islam) soon.
