Reader comment on item: [The Road Map:] Learning from Oslo

Submitted by Ruth Morton Fazio (United States), Jun 10, 2003 at 14:04

Your suggestions are constructive, but it seems that the jury is already in. Apparently the State Department's approach to the Arabs has prevailed over the National Security Council's, and we will have more of the same: appeasement of the Arabs and pressure on Israel to make deadly concessions. Abbas, who was hand-picked by Arafat, has already said that Arafat is in charge, and that the terrorists will be urged to have a cease-fire, but not forcibly dismantled. The US has not stuck to its commitment to making the Roadmap results-based, but rather ignores the recent terrorism and insists that the Process is still on track. I personally see nothing but a continuation of the policies we have followed for 55 years, and no signs that we have learned anything from that great teacher, history. The Roadmap, after all, was drafted by arch-enemies of Israel, so how could anyone regard it as anything but a farce.
