Reader comment on item: [The Road Map:] Learning from Oslo

Can Abbas obtain that the Hamas calms down? Does anybody can?
Can Sharon obtain that the settlers calm down? Does anybody can?

Daniel Pipes implies here that Israel and Palestine are "normal" states, where some head can decide something and have its decisions respected and applied. But I'm afraid it is not so. Abbas doesn't control the violent Palestinian elements (which are more popular than him) and many of the most violent settlers didn't ever vote Sharon. Thus if violence is going to be a reason for stopping the progress, there probably won't be much progress to see.

There's too much hatred over there, too many people who just don't want peace. Just victory. Or just the defeat of the enemy.

We should start by creating a situation, a moment in time, where the massive majority of people, Israeli and Palestinian, do want peace, do want to sacrifice their striving for vengeance, their hatred, in favor of peace. That is the challenge of bringing peace in the region.
