Iraqi nationReader comment on item: [Looting:] An Iraqi Tragedy Submitted by Joseph Wechsler (United States), Apr 22, 2003 at 18:02 There is no such nation. Iraqis are a mixture of nations of ancient vintage who had lived in Mesopotamia speaking a variety of languages and worshipping a variety of divinities, that have resisted unification for over six millenia, and managed to live together only under imposed regimes like monarchy or dictatorship. They lack national pride, as evidenced by their willingness to plunder their own dowry, the only common cultural heritage. Such people do not know how to handle liberty. They are better off under totalitarian regimes. Saddam would have been ideal, had he not chosen to threaten the rest of the world.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
