Values plus understanding will win

This is an issue that cannot be solved by simplistic thinking, from either the left or the right (neither of which is particularly relevant to these problems). We need to explain American values to the world -- first by practicing them thoroughly ourselves, and secondly by getting into the mindset of those whom we would like to persuade. The advertising industry has been doing this for decades -- sometimes obnoxiously, but sometimes with great insight. This whole issue should be approached with great care, thought and insight. We need to get this right!
