Your words are so true and your argument so compelling to anyone who thinks about this issue objectively. I believe it is a symptom of a much larger, but not necessarily more dangerous environment created by the isolation and "glow factor" that academia has enjoyed and exploited forever. The whole academic system is sick, and has been for some time, but has been allowed to fester because no one or no group or organization questions or demands that it justifies its value.
