Reader comment on item: Profs Who Hate America
in response to reader comment: Grass roots organizations attempting to address this problem?

Submitted by J. Keen Holland (United States), Nov 14, 2002 at 01:52

This problem has been a long time brewing. When I was at UVa in the late 60's the economics faculty purged James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock who each went on to do stellar work elsewhere. A friend of mine was advised at least twice to delay his dissertation defense in one of the hard sciences because of faculty objections to his work in the Republican Party. I got an F in a speech class for writing a speech asserting the university's duty to the taxpayers to keep the school open in the face of a hypothetical takeover by leftists. And all this at a public school in the South.

In my day, the main sources of intellectual support in the constant battle with leftist faculty and student leaders were the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (www.isi.org) and Young Americans for Freedom, now known as Young America's Foundation (www.yaf.org). As the web addresses indicate, they are still around. Look them up to see if they can help you. Another good outfit, started after I left college by Morton Blackwell with whom I had the pleasure of working in a number of conservative campaigns in Virginia, is The Leadership Institute (leadershipinstitute.org); check it out, too.
