Reader comment on article: Profs Who Hate America
Submitted by helgalaninng (Netherlands) , Feb 9, 2003 at 16:06
it appears that when debating the issue of politics, many want to label, or stereotype, opposing views so others may not look at both sides of an argument.
while i am a very patriotic american, (i love our history, the landscape, our creativity....) i feel that most contemporary americans make ill-informed decisions based on mis-information or a lack of information. the whole world wishes to hate a people that are themselves blindfolded. how many people reading this know that saddam hussein asked the american gov. in '90 if we would involve ourselves if he decided to invade iraq, to which he received an absolute 'no'. or, that 6 months after he gassed the kurds we resumed arms sales. or, in '81, what were the iran hostage takers requesting for the return of the hostages? i could go on and on.....my point is, SOME of these professors should be listened to, they may be what saves us.
i know i sound full of doom, but that is what i feel about 'my people'. i am not saying this with any joy. i am not delighted to rain down on the great amerian parade that i once gleefully danced in. once i learned the history of the atrocities our government has committed (info. that is not easily accessable, even in university) i realized there are always two sides to a story. what is so funny is that so many americans do not want to hear both sides. when faced with this other opinion, there seems to be name calling and a literal intellectual block is built. "if you are not with us, you are against us" sounds so similar to "well, why don't you just move somewheres' else if you don't like everything america does!!?"
