Reader comment on item: The Scandal of U.S.-Saudi Relations

Submitted by Abu Nudnik (United States), Dec 12, 2006 at 15:04

It's fascinating that so-called scholars like Mearsheimer and Walt can become so popular with their badly researched screed on Jews in America lobbying in favor of Israel when the subject of lobbying by a foreign government barely merits a mention! Jewish Americans are, after all, Americans, and have a right to express themselves on any and every political event and policy, like any other American, whereas the lobbying of think-tankers and other lobbyists by a foreign power comes very close, it seems to me, to treason, or it would if the purpose of the lobbying were to undermine the American government, constitution or society.

But what if, though the purpose is not, the result is the same? Can't someone investigate these charges of bribery? It would be fascinating to get a closer look at the relationship between the Carters and the House of Saud. Perhaps it would explain his most recent book on Israel. At one time I thought Mr. Carter wanted Israel to love her enemy even unto death: for the Jew to show he was worthy of life by a process of auto-crucifixion; could it be that it is only the lust of filthy lucre behind JC's mask of righteousness?

The scandal here, Mr. Pipes, is that there is no scandal. I have not thought much of Michael Moore but at least he deserves credit for unearthing some of the stuff covered in this excellent article, like the favorable treatment given to the bin Ladens after 9/11. That he lays it all at the foot of his straw demon, George Bush, is another matter.
