Having lived and worked in Arab society for 25 years, I commend Rip for his post (2003; read it) Islam in a secular state/free society is very different from the way it's practiced and supported in an Islamic theocracy. As he says, there's a lot of 'wishful thinking' re: the principles of Islam. Unchecked by moderate, tolerant influences, it can be (to put it very mildly) scary.
