Reader comment on item: [Symposium:] Why Does the World Hate America?

Submitted by Adam Greaves (Saudi Arabia), Jan 19, 2003 at 01:41

You are right, it's resentment not hate.

People are jealous of America's success. However, this is a jealousy that is purposefully instilled in them by their own failed governments, via the media, to distract them from the corruption, nepotism, ineptitude and general economic failure of their own rulers.

Israel and other items are merely pretexts chosen by governments to spoon feed daily doses of anti-western propaganda in the tightly controlled media.

Egypt is a prime example. It receives millions of dollars of US aid a year. Yet its press, which is subject to tight state control, is radically anti-American. Saudi Arabia, which relies on the US to buy its oil, police the Gulf so they can ship it out, and provide military protection, also has a shockingly anti-western tone in its press. Yet every word is sanctioned by the government.

In short, anti-Americanism is an artificial creation that is the child of third world governments. The US could stop it tomorrow if it wished, by linking assistance to a change in the message spooned out in the press. However, as long as the US tolerates the present situation, the anti-Americanism will grow.

Stop letting them have it both ways. Military and economic aid shouldn't come free.
