Reader comment on item: [Symposium:] Why Does the World Hate America?
in response to reader comment: Hating America

Submitted by Troy (Canada), Jun 28, 2008 at 22:58

This anti-Americanism of Canada's is a result of jealousy on our part and the other part is America's continental military strength has allowed Canada to spend money on social programs at the expense of building a viable military. Americans believe in themselves and that makes us more envious because quite frankly there is nothing to believe in Canada but mere platitudes. Americans like to take action and often screw up. Canadians don't screw up internationally because we take no real action. So when the US screws up we say "Take that!" or "Serves you right". It's pathetic really.

Instead of distancing ourselves from the US constantly and if we became more patriotic, then maybe the knee-jerk Anti-Americanism would end, finally. In other words, Canada has a problem finding its own identity so let's beat up on someone who has one. We can do it without being American but at the same time being respectable neighbors.
