why the world hates america...

Reader comment on item: [Symposium:] Why Does the World Hate America?

I'm an American...my country takes a lot of flak from the rest of world. I admit some of it we deserved. But do we deserve the indecency that we suffer now? Think back sixty years when the sight of an American was a miracle from above. When people living under the murderous nazi regime were hiding in darkened attics, rotting in death camps, or being shot in an open field.

The men of my country that gave their lives, not only our freedom but for everyone's, are already having their sacrifice spat upon by the people of the rest of the world. What of the countless cities rebuilt after being reduced to ashes in it's wake. What of the world that we built...where are our ulterior motives to not only creating our own nation but building up the rest of the world with us.

People hate us and rejoice at our downfall because we reap the fruits of our labors without having to ask their permission. We are percieved as ignorant greedy and fat...yet somehow such a loathsome combination of unredeeming qualities has made us the world's one and only super power. People hate us because what we are is something they percieve they could never be. Because a pizza delivery driver can live like a king in comparison to other countries. And it seems whenever we make any action regarding the outside world we are shunned one way or the other...DO THE PEOPLE OF THE REST OF WORLD KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE STOPPED INTERACTING WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD? The results would be catastrophic...we here in America are rich because our home has all the necessary resources within it to further ourselves... But it seems I'm fighting an uphill battle for loving my country...cause when others cowered in fear my people stood up to the evils of the world. To the Nazi's, To the murderous communists, To the evil of Saddam. And cowards always betray the hero's out of spite.

We don't answer to the rest of the world, the world answers to us. That is the definition of the sole superpower. My country is not perfect but whom among you can even begin to touch it...we have graced the face of the moon, we have come to your rescue in the two largest conflicts in history, we have become the greatest power the world has ever seen, and we did it in a relatively small amount of time. And what has any of your countries done lately? America is the thing of legend, why do you think so many people immigrate here. Because they can create a modest amount of money here, bring it back home with them and live like kings.

Let me ask what country has the track record required to criticize us. Is it France, a country that surrendered and betrayed it's people at the first sight of trouble in World War Two. Is it Germany, a country known for it's mass murdering talents (whom we the americans with the british deafeated). Is it Canada, known for it's uneventful history, hockey, and syrup. Or perhaps it's any number of middle eastern countries known for it's murder, rape, and corrupted officials. Or perhaps an African country with it's disease, mass genocides, and a still vibrant slave labor program.

I don't hate Europe, or Africa, or Asia, or even the Middle East. The fact of the matter is that no country is perfect, but ours is belittled and ridiculed cause of it's dominance over an imperfect world. If my country's leaders truly wanted, we could conquer every inch of the globe...if we threw compassion and convention to the wind and flexed our military stregnth to it's maximum there would not be a single shred of this world not living under the stars and stripes. We don't though cause we give a damn...we don't cause we do care, that's why we land on foreign shores and give our lives...cause some things are more important...That's not to say that every conflict we've engaged in was a noble undertaking. But we always put our hearts in it and try to pull something good from it...so go on hating america if you want...but one day we might just become what you accuse us of being....and then my friends, you will be in a world... unlike any the earth has ever known.
