Extremely disappointing...

Reader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism

Submitted by Paul Warren (United States), Feb 23, 2006 at 02:16

You imply that reliance on coercion is something new to 20th century islamists. Another name for islam, in use for centuries, is Mohammedism. Mohammed alone founded the movement (I purposely do not use the narrower term religion) and prescibed all of its fundamental principles. If you study the life of Mohammed in even a very superficial way (using the muslims' own holy tracts, which are practically the only sources available), you will find that he was a proponent and practitioner of coercion and even terror. He also, out of one side of his mouth, preached peace and brotherhood. But he was a mass killer. He once had 700 unarmed Jewish captives beheaded in his august presence! (Don't believe me? Think I am exaggerating? Search for "Qurayza" on the web or on any index of muslim holy tracts.) Mohammed's movement was never purely religious. It always, from day one, aimed at secular power. Indeed, the aim was always worldwide secular power, in the name of allah. Western intellectual elites, meaning well, continually whitewash islam. There may soon be hell to pay for this institutionalized mass self-deception.
