Reader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism

Submitted by Patrick (United Kingdom), Feb 1, 2015 at 11:41

It would be pointless nit-picking to question the analysis but the suggestions for "dealing" with the "problem" are questionable.

Saudi Arabia is clearly an Islamic country but offers no threat to the west so why the need to "contain Islamists"?

The sort of Islamism currently on display in Iraq owes little to Islam and more to greed and human perversion.

We should leave Islamic states to find their own preferred solution in the time honoured way of trial and error.

Perverted regimes, such as ISIS should be told that they will be bombed relentlessly until they bring their behaviour into line with international standards laid down by the UN or a similar organisation.

Finally, the use of the word "Islam" within any description of terrorist activity linked with Islamic principles should be discouraged. Extremist Islam has nothing to do with Islam and we should deny the terrorists this moral cover. They are terrorists or gangsters or just another Mafia but to link them with Islam simply alienates 1.6 law abiding Muslims.
