Reader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism
in response to reader comment: islam not a religion of peace

Wow, the voice of reason. All the sane and rational voices of Islam (and indeed the world) seem to be Muslim women and I say fair play to them and more strength to their elbows. Waris Dirie, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Benazir Bhutto, Sharin Ebadi, Marjene Satrapi. All are supreme heroines. They have real beliefs and convictions. In the west, by contrast, we have Germaine Greer and a large bunch of wannabes – wannabe just like men. As Marjene once said 'You become like your enemy, you lose'. Western feminism promises the usual revolutionary promise – more of the same under new management. It's almost always worse. Western feminists are no improvement on patriarchal authoritarianism (and no friends of Muslim women either).

I've made my comments on western feminists on another site. I have given Germaine Greer supreme status (she'll be glad).

Islamism is an evil and pernicious militant political ideology, suitable for those who seek to be state thugs in a terror – run state. They do indeed hold no beliefs and quite a few of their number are outright psychopaths.

Islam is a religious belief with a huge emphasis on the punishment for transgressors. Killing people is right under Islam, though actually, Christians and Jews (both Abrahamites) get some rights to their own beliefs. Hindus, Jainists. Buddhists , Rastafarians, Taoists etc can forget it.

Fatimah is right about patriarchy, wrong about Islam, and right about the political position of Christian extremists in the world to-day.

A world ruled by Fatimah and the above-mentioned Muslim heroines would be better though it could not in reality happen. Patriarchy rules and the very worst of them is Islam. The reformation required is to bin the great patriarchal script that is the Qur'an which preaches murder and hatred and war. It lives by having enemies and can only live by war. And there's nothing in it for women (or any good, decent civilized person)

In Christendom, the extremists are marginalized. They are granted freedom of speech but only under the condition of challenge. They are not in control.

I respect Fatimah and wish her well. She deserves respect. There are an awful lot of good Islamic people in the world, in spite of their leaders and what the misguided minority do in their name.

Salaam Alaykum
