Killing of Warsame Shire Awale in Somalia

Reader comment on item: Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism

Submitted by Prashant (United States), Oct 30, 2012 at 13:20

Dear Dr Pipes:

Yet another person becomes an islamist's statistic. In Somalia poet Warsame Shire Awale was killed for standing up to the Islamists. Awale worked as a radio artist for more than three decades and recently asked the Somali youth to shun violence and work for UN backed organizations. His most recent crime was to oppose al-shabab the Somali edition of Islamist outfits. According to the BBC, Awale was the 18th media person to be killed in Somalia this year.

We often wonder how come people in Islamic countries have so much agreement about religion among themselves. While tens of religions are found in almost every country of the world, most Islamic countries are 98% muslim. When you have to live under the shadow of a gun, agreement is easy to come by.
