Reader comment on item: [Israel's Gaza Withdrawal:] A Democracy Killing Itself

Submitted by DONVAN (United States), Aug 18, 2005 at 17:11

Overwhelming, violent and sustained force, complete and utter subjugation of the enemy, suppression and martial law. If the enemy is given an inch,he will take a mile. War is won by the destruction of the enemy. The problem is Israel is soft and getting softer.
The enemy is counting on the Israelis to be less barbaric, less violent, less aggressive. As a former combat Marine, I can tell you no battle was ever won by being less violent than the enemy. War IS violence; ugly, horrible, painful, violence. If the survival of the nation is at stake, the choice is made. The Israeli Democracy is worth all the theocratic terrorocracies in the region. These people understand only violence and power. ... What does Israel have to lose? Dr Pipes is correct, Israel may cease to exist. At that point, all the noble gestures become moot. Peace partner? what peace, what partner? Seeing the magnificent IDF reduced to forcing their OWN PEOPLE to surrender to an enemy who wants to see another Holocaust visited on the Jews is wrong.
