Reader comment on item: [Israel's Gaza Withdrawal:] A Democracy Killing Itself

Submitted by Jacob Goldberg, MD (Israel), Aug 15, 2005 at 13:00

Since the beginning of "disengagement", I saw in it a trap for Palestinians.

Knowing Sharon's past, he was sure they would bombard us mercilessly, which would give, him and us, an acceptable reason for hitting them with all the might of our armed forces.

So far, they haven't fallen for it. Smarter than expected. The next days will be crucial.

If they refrain, we shall have to wait for a repeat of terrorism from Samaria, which, I hope, will not be tolerable.

As of now, the pain of our people in Gush Katif is enormous, hardly worth the disengagement.

I hope Hamas will behave as expected.
