Sharon is trapping the Palestinians

Reader comment on item: [Israel's Gaza Withdrawal:] A Democracy Killing Itself

I agree with Steven Feldman's comments about Sharon's foresight. This cunning leaders goal his whole life has been Israeli security, and if he needs to change from Hawk to Chameleon to do it, he will. He is changing his historical tactics 180 degrees and appearing to show weakness...or is he? If I were the Palestinians, I would be highly CONCERNED that their sworn enemy is giving up Gaza unilaterally. Why is he doing this? He may be gambling that the situation there needs to get worse so he can make it better. Perhaps it unfolds like this:

Sharon knows, as we are already starting to see, that the Palestinians will be emboldened by unilateral withdrawal, and this is what he needs. They will act in the predictable and self-mutilating way they always have--without any interest for rational self-rule and without leadership who prepare them for compromise. "Gazastan" is then destined to become a safe-haven for terrorists--including Zarqawi's minnions, flush with Al-Qaeda weapons and explosives smuggled through an unchecked deep sea port on the Med. and a direct border with Egypt. The area will become even more out of control, and Blair and Bush will find this a great threat to their own policies. Eventually, The West will actually ASK Israel to crack down on Gazastan. Sharon is placing bait out there for the Palestinians that, once taken, will give him more support to level those Islamofacists that threaten Israel, the region, and western idealogies. What the Palestians don't realize is that Sharon's "gift" of Gaza comes with two more items beyond just hydorponic farms and stucco houses:

1. A large magnifying glass to expose to the frustrated West in a big way the uncanny Palestinian willingness to turn resources for rebuilding into those that are used for destruction and death.

2. Just enough rope/land to "hang themselves" on the world stage.

Both care of Ariel Sharon.

Only when the Palestinians decide to love their families more than they hate Jews will there be a chance for them to get the dignity and land they crave.
