Choose to wear the hijab

Reader comment on item: Assessing Obama's Cairo Speech
in response to reader comment: Missing the point about Hijab

Submitted by Bronson (Australia), Jun 9, 2009 at 01:15

Speaking of in the West, as we know a good number of hijab wearers do not freely choose to wear the hijab at all but are forced to by honour killings, beatings etc from male family members. Others say that they choose to do so but methinks they protesteth too much. Their arguments appear to be designed to convince themselves that it is a free choice, rather than anyone else.

The fact is that a muslim woman is commanded to wear the hijab either by interpretation, by males, of the Koran, or by peer pressure. So Obama's statement of support is a statement of support for the males who project onto women their own sexual incontinence and then demand that the women take responsibility for their own inadequacies. It was a slap in the face of those women who come to the US yearning to be free.

However it was a statement of support for some women - those who relish being part of the silent jihad.
