Reader comment on item: Hating Valentine's Day
in response to reader comment: Traditional Jews have problems with Valentine's day too

Submitted by Terry (European Union), Mar 1, 2007 at 15:52

Sorry Mo, almost the entire thread of these posts consists of Muslims against Valentines day (not all, but most) and others including me telling them, that no one is forcing them to celebrate it, or indeed any other festival, they don't believe in. That is the point.

If anyone was actually forcing a Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Sikh, whatever to celebrate something they do not believe in, I would be the first to protest in the strongest democratic terms (without resorting to violence). The message is simple, live and let live.

No one protests at Muslims observing Ramadan in Britain, or Eid al Fitr etc.. No one protests if Hindus celebrate Diwali. Why should they object to us celebrating according to our customs and beliefs? If some people celebrate Valentine's day by using it for sex, as seems to be the main Muslim objection, how precisely is that harming Muslims?
