Reader comment on item: Strange Logic in the Lebanon War

Submitted by irwin gross (United States), Aug 16, 2006 at 06:28

i have been glued to the TV for a month now, first with Gaza and then Lebanon. In addition i read endless pieces on the wars, and have watched how the war has become a propaganda machine of anti-Israeli rhetoric. I have become frustrated and upset over the coverage. BBC and CNN, the New York Times and others are looking for equivalency as the criterion for this war. I can not believe that this is like Alice in Wonderland, the world is turned upside down. Israel gets attacked twice and she is the aggressor. She fights back and the attackers are the victims, the shot rockets in to populated area's to try and kill people with no regard to who gets hurt and Israel loses people by trying to save innocent people, and they are the bad ones. I watch and hear and become more and more aggravated over this.

The nature of war has changed. TV and news has brought the war into our homes. In other times the Palestinians would have been concquered or exiled and that would have been the end. All the towns of Southern Lebonan would have been leveled and the population moved. The war would have been fast and bloody. The war would have been fought to win. No one fights wars to win any more. However, the Russians do and you hear nothing about the way they fight their wars, the enemy knows what to expect when they start and know the price they have to pay.

I wonder how long democracies can survive when they are not willing to fight a war against their enemies to win, but only to inflict damage. Unless they fight to win they will always lose. I think that is what we are seeing in the US and Israel, and the long term price for this is devastating consequencies.
