Reader comment on item: Strange Logic in the Lebanon War

Submitted by Dave Goodwin (United States), Aug 15, 2006 at 21:42

My respect and admiration of Pipes' writings --- and agreement with them ---- is almost unlimited, but I disagree with parts of this piece, e.g., (paraphrased) " when West fights non-West, West's victory is a given." The "given" part has been exhausted. Victory will be up-hill.

For some years now, West has been losing on nearly every front and we are in real danger of losing totally and permanently. We are sniping at the edges of the enemy's flanks while ignoring or, worse, helping strengthen his core strengths. We send billions of dollars to enemy nations (through oil and other purchases) while watching those funds used to teach and preach unbridled hate and violence against us in homes, schools, mosques, media and government. We observe genteel rules of polite combat while the enemy violates all rules of law and morality. We are seemingly inviting defeat.

I agree, of course, that we are also losing (and probably have irreversably lost) the PR war, but of course we should try to catch up. Catch up seems to be our major strategy.
