As some one said, Slavery is not in the past, it still exists among us today, within all religions and cultures. This is why Quran advocates, again and again to free a slave as an attonement for sin.
Quran; Chapter 4 " Women", Verse 3:
"If you deem it best for the orphans, you may marry their mothers - you may marry two, three or four. if you fear lest you become unfair, then you shall be content with only one, or with what you already have. Additionally, you are thus more likely to avoid financial hardship."

The first part of the verse is KEY, and sets the tone for the rest of the verse. This law is provided as a benefit for the orphan child by providing a fatherly figure, rather than to fulfill one's personal lust.
One of the second most distorted and abused verses in the Quran.
