Reader comment on item: Mocking Muhammad Is Not Hate Speech

Submitted by john w mcginley (United States), Sep 26, 2012 at 11:14

Count me out on your suggestion. Generally speaking satirizing the figures and symbols of religions might be fun but they are offensive and unnecessarily hurtful. There should be a strong "ethos" against. it. It shouldn't be a law. But law should not cover all things. When a great society loses its sense of a decent "ethos" you can count the decades on one hand for the demise of that once-great society Your suggestion would only speed the whole situation.

If in the future some movie or cartoon satirizes or demeans figures and symbols of Islamic persuasion ((and this would be true for other groupings as well although Islam is the present issue)) an American leader should ONCE and ONLY ONCE disavow the slur. Period. If we had a strong President with the resolve not to take any BS on this matter the whole thing would titrate down quickly. Obama is not such a President. Thus the current dilemma.

I once again submit that if Obama is re-elected our country will rather quickly become a nation governed by a Tyrant in the classical sense. The saddest part of this is NOT Obama per se, but the fact that Obama is so clearly an anti-american President AND YET it appears that (perhaps with the aid of massive voter fraud on Novenber sixth) that a clear majority of Americans will vote for Obama. His egregious and multi-faceted shortcomings should be perceived as self-evident. But, it seems, they are not self-evident at all to the majority of Americans. If we do end up sliding into an Obama tyranny -- this is not an exaggeration albeit people don't yet see it -- we will only have ourselves to blame for our slide into such an outcome. Again, think of Athens around 410 bce.
