Reader comment on item: Mocking Muhammad Is Not Hate Speech

Submitted by PHILIOR (United States), Sep 25, 2012 at 00:40

I'd like to stress the very common casual connection between violence and anti-Islamic expressions as if violence is a natural unavoidable inescapable response to whatever Muslims deem offensive.

""The solution to escalating violence and hate speech is not more hate speech." as Sheila Musaji of The American Muslim website put it.
How often we hear such warnings. The hidden goal of repeatedly connecting two different things is to imbed into our minds that any critique of Islam invariably leads to violence thus making a critic responsible for it.

Very symptomatically, last Thursday, WNYC's (93.9FM NY) Brian Lehrer started his morning show with the following announcement:
"Where freedom of speech meets stupidity (verbatim)" - it's about French magazine publishing Mohammed cartoons when embassies are being burned in the Middle East - he explained.

In his view, stupidity is not meeting terrorists' demands and complying with whatever they want us to do, but showing that terror won't scare us into submission.
