Reader comment on item: Mocking Muhammad Is Not Hate Speech

Submitted by Fred Baehr (United States), Sep 25, 2012 at 11:58

If I had any hope that the Islamic rioters could be persuaded by logical arguments I would not advocate confrontational methods. Same if I thought they would ever join the modern world of free inquiry voluntarily. So, as I have said before here, we should make more videos and burn Korans. The Islamists have answered us in their way with violence and murder, and now we must answer them in our way with free speech. I think we should burn not only Korans but our own "holy" books too, and even our flag, noting that we are free to do so because we are in fact free.

This site is the most informed I have found, and its stance on the values of freedom is spot on. Thank you Dr. Pipes. The country needs to hear more from you somehow. The multicultural media must be made to consider your point of view and understand your insights. I would love to see your documentary movie hit the theaters. As a matter of fact a movie about Muhammad that was based only on the most traditional sources would be the best way to go about it. You are just the person to write such a film, and you might even find a producer in our climate of escalating realization and fear. I think millions of people like me are tired of having Muhammad's knife to our throats, and tired of being told that any critical discussion of Islam is dangerous, inflamatory, racist, and wrong, unlike critical discussion of anything else. We need scholars like you to lead the charge and keep us from becoming that which we behold.

The movies are still the most powerful medium in the world. I hope you are considering just such a project. You could do it a way that would hold up intellectually as few others, like perhaps Ibn Warraq, could do. I want to see it. I want your voice to speak loud and clear for the freedoms you so ably defend. Thank you for all you do.

Thank you for the idea, but I am quite wedded to print - unless someone invites me to make a cameo appearance on film.
